Charges in Florida boot camp death

Nearly 11 months after a teen boy passed way after beating at a Panhandle boot camp, which was caught on videotape and led to a patch up of Florida's juvenile justice system, seven former guards and a nurse were then charged on Tuesday with manslaughter.

I'm finally getting justice for my baby, said Gina Jones, mother of Martin Lee Anderson, who was 14 when he died.

Florida woos grapefruit juice lovers

The Florida Department of Citrus is now in partner with Catalina Marketing to win back grapefruit juice users.

Using Catalina's consumer database, FDOC would certainly be able to target grapefruit juice consumers based on every individual purchase behavior and issue coupons for discounts on their next purchase.

The company could then identify grapefruit juice consumers, and target those shoppers with more incentives to increase their purchases or frequency of purchases, it said in a release.

A Harrowing Discovery by Florida Family

A family in Florida made a harrowing discovery when they were shock to found the body of their daughter on her head and decomposing behind a bookcase.

The St. Petersburg Times reported that Mariesa Weber, 38, lived with her parents and with her sister. She went missing three days before Halloween.

The family thought that she had been kidnapped, contacted the Pasco County Sheriff's Office and sent out fliers.

Double Stabbing At Florida Mall

Deputies in Orange County are quizzical more teenagers after a fight at the Florida Mall ends with two people being stabbed.

Investigators said it all began after the 17-year-old was attacked in face of the Zales Jewelry Store before 5 p.m. Sunday.

Deputies said he stabbed one of the four men that went after him and also then took off, but then stabbed a second person when the suspects ran after him.

Florida shoppers are predictable to spend more than shoppers countrywide this holiday season; it was according to a survey commissioned by the Florida Retail Federation.

Florida shoppers then plan to treat themselves more kindly, spending more on themselves in November and December than consumers in other states.

Air traffic controllers at Tampa International Airport are now disputed with the Federal Aviation Administration with over brighter lighting in the dim radar room. The controller's union told the St. Petersburg Times the new lighting makes it much harder to see aircraft on the radar screens.

The FAA has made a decision, which safety in the control room is more vital than keeping airplanes apart, said Pat McCormick, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association at the Tampa control tower.

South Florida added Commerce branches

Two banks with rapidly-growing South Florida operations have now new added branches.

Miami-based Great Florida Bank said it has newly opened a branch at 1501 S.E. 17th St., in Fort Lauderdale. The branch is actually Great Florida's sixth in Broward County. The two-year-old bank has seven branches in Miami-Dade County. Great Florida had $1.4 billion in assets during Sept. 30.

Florida consumers spends less for Christmas

Despite falling gasoline prices, Florida consumers still do not plan to spend more this Christmas season compared to last year.

Results from two surveys by the University of Florida this fall are reliable: Consumers have less money to spend because of huge expenses for their utilities, insurance premiums, rising interest rates and from debts from last years Christmas shopping.

A telephone survey of 504 Florida residents during October found that 54.6 percent of consumers said they expect their purchases would still be the same as last year; 32.8 percent said less than last year; and only 12.6 percent said more than last year.

Is Florida Ready for Democracy?

Florida really needs to show that it is a carrying out democracy by getting to the bottom of the difficulty in all District 13 Congressional Race in Sarasota County. Republican Vern Buchanan leads Christine Jennings by only 369 votes.

The numbers reported the day after the election demonstrated that its a glaring problem: over 18,000 voters cast ballots, but did not vote in the Congressional race. Overall, that is a 14% under-vote rate that is improbably high for this race.

Stranded pilot whale dies in Florida

A stranded male pilot whale died this Tuesday at a Florida Keys-based marine mammal treatment center.

The whale was about 12 1/2 feet in length and its weighing approximately 1,000 pounds, was then transported by truck to the Marine Mammal Conservancy after it stranded Monday in Everglades National Park, near Chokoloskee.

Shuttle crew goes to Florida for rehearsal

The crew of the space shuttle Discovery is now ready to get some more practice before game time.

The seven astronauts are in Florida for several days of dress rehearsal to arrange for their launch during December. The astronauts would practice emergency escapes, shuttle landing and also counting down to launch.

The 12-day mission on Discovery would take them to the international space station.

Florida State's players had swayed themselves that an undefeated month of November may still salvage the worst season in this program's from past three decades.

They can end the year on the upswing. They can still win a "state championship" with double upsets of Miami and Florida. They could again do whatever they did last year that is erasing much of the aftertaste of a mediocre season with an astonishingly strong finish.

Train Crash at Florida - Report

An Amtrak train banging into a tractor trailer at the industrial rail crossing on Wednesday, killing the truck driver, authorities said. Two train passengers had major injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Wade said the crossing was not actually on a public road and had warning lights and a crossing gate.

The train was en route to Miami from New York, Amtrak said.

Great Florida Bank reaches Q3 profit

The Miami-based bank said it earned $750,900, or 6 cents a share, on assets of $1.4 billion for the third quarter. For the same period the year before, Great Florida Bank said it lost $661,000, or 10 cents a share, on assets of $739.56 million.

At Sept. 30, Great Florida Bank said it did not have any non-performing loans and delinquent loans totaled $2.5 million, or .22 of a percent of total loans outstanding.
