We will list some of the people who contibuted for the development of
florida in some form or another and this is no means an inclusive list
and will grow by time.
Wallace Amos
Wallace Amos Jr., also called Wally Amos is a capitalist, spokesman, actor
and book author born in the year 1936, in Tallahassee, Florida. Then,
he migrated to Manhattan, New York, where his aunty prepared chocolate
chip cookies. Amos had great interest in cooking from a very young age.
Amos fascinated clients to the William Morris Agency by distributing
them chocolate chip cookies along with an incitement to visit him. His
new company began to inflate, and, ultimately, "Famous Amos"
chocolate chip cookie bags were found to sell in all supermarkets across
the United States
Fernando Bujones
Born in Miami, Florida to Cuban parents, Bujones is considered as one
of the best male dancers of the 20th century and became the greatest American
male artiste of his age group. Throughout his 30 year dancing profession
he performed as a guest performer in 34 countries and with over 60 companies,
which includes all leading light ones.
He was not only one of the youngest most important dancers in the earth,
but the youngest prime male dancer in American Ballet Theatre’s
history.
Steve Lefty Carlton
Steven Norman Carlton born on December 22nd, 1944 in Miami, Florida is
an ex- left-handed pitcher in League Baseball, from 1965 to 1988 and retired
as one of the most triumphant pitchers to play the game. Philadelphia
fans fondly knew him as "Lefty."
An all time Star, Carlton led the association in many pitching groups.
He struck out 4,136 batters in his profession, a left-handed pitcher with
a record, and holds many other records for both left-handed and Phillies
pitchers. His 329 career wins are the tenth most in baseball history.
Jacqueline Cochran
Jacqueline Cochran in early life called Bessie Lee Pittman, born on August
28th 1910 and she was the founder American aviatrix. In spite of her lack
of education, she had a speedy mind and likeness for business. Later,
in 1951, she was voted one of the 25 exceptional businesswomen in America
by the Boston Chamber of Commerce and named her "Woman of the Year
in Business."
She was awarded the following:
• In 1971 she was inducted into National Aviation hall of Fame.
• She is the first women to be ever honored by United States Air
Force Academy
• In 1996, US postage honored her with a postage stamp
• She was inducted in Motor sports Hall of Fame of America in 1993.
Gloria Estefan
Gloria Estefan, whose birth name Gloria Maria Milagrosa fajardo, was born
on September 1st, 1951 in Havana, Cuba. She is a five-time Grammy Award-winning
singer-songwriter-author, who began her profession as lead songster for
the Hispanic dance music band, Miami Sound Machine, in 1975, and passed
over to mainstream trendy achievement with English-speaking audiences
with the intercontinental hit singles.
In addition to her musical success, Estefan is an entrepreneur. In addition
to her five Grammy’s, Estefan has received a number of other awards.
In May, 1993, she was honored the Ellis Island Congressional Medal of
Honor, which is the premier award that can be given to a naturalized U.S.
citizen. She has won the Hispanic Heritage Award.
Dwright Gooden
Dwight Eugene Gooden born on November 16th 1964 in Tampa, Florida, is
an American former baseball player. He was one of the most feared pitchers
in the National League. quickly developed a reputation with his 97 MPH
fastball and sweeping curveball, which was given the superlative nickname
of "Lord Charles," a common nickname for a curveball
He was even more dominating in 1985, winning 24 games while losing only
four and leading both leagues in wins. Gooden won 17 games while losing
9, led the league in strikeouts
Harry Tyson Moore
Harry Tyson Moore born in Houston, Florida on November 18th, 1905. Harry
was a foremost human rights activist in Brevard country, Florida, and
led the Florida institute fight for equality and justice. He controlled
a group who selected John Gilbert to file suit for equal pay for black
and white teachers. He shaped the Progressive Voters League of Florida
- Became its Executive Director.
Jim Morrison
Born on December 8th 1943, in Melbourne, Florida. He was a vocalist and
rhymester also a lead singer, songwriter and versifier. He is considered
to be one of the most fascinating front men in the history of rock music.
He was also an instigator of quite a lot of poetry books, a documentary,
dumpy film and an early music video.
Osceola
Osceola born on January 20th 1804 near Alabama, Georgia and was the leader
of Seminole Indians in Florida.
Blamed of a assassinate he did not commit, he went south into Seminole
Indian territory, where he would join a village of fugitive slaves and
Native Americans whose lives are in jeopardy when American soldiers endeavor
to detain the escaped slaves and return them to their previous owners.
Motivated by his love for the attractive Morning Dew, Osceola took up
the cause of shielding his new home and is catapulted into history.
Osceola expired because of malaria on January 20, 1838 less than three
months after his confine, and was buried with military honors.
Sidney Poitier
Sidney Poitier born on February 20th 1927, in Miami, Florida is a Bahamian-American
actor. He hailed as a step forward star whose performances were highly
acclaimed which intentionally defy earlier tribal stereotyping, giving
a new dramatic trustworthiness for Black actors to conventionalize film
audiences.
He won the Grammy awards of 2001 and Hall of Fame award in 2001. He
also won award for Image Award for Outstanding Actor in television movie
and in 1992, a Life Time Achievement award. He won Golden Globe awards
as the best actor in films and dramas. He was also appointed as a Knight
of British Empire in 1974.
A. Philip Randolph
Asa Philip Randolph born on April 15th 1889 in Crescent
city, Florida. He was a communist in labor movement and the US civil rights
society. In 1925, he planned the first serious effort to form a labor
union for the employees of the Pullman Company, who was a chief employer
of both African Americans.
Randolph came out as one of the most noticeable spokespersons for African-American
civil constitutional rights. He projected a March on Washington to remonstrate
racial unfairness in the armed forces. Randolph also helped Rustin and
Martin Luther King to systematize the March on Washington for Jobs and
Freedom on August 28, 1963.
On September 14, 1964, Lyndon B. Johnson gifted Randolph with the Presidential
Medal of Freedom.
